Description
Giuseppe Vasi – Porta Pertusa Etching and burin on contemporary laid paper, 194 x 295 mm
A splendid and crisp 18th-century view of Porta Pertusa, situated along the Leonine Walls close to Vatican Hill. In the background, beyond the defensive perimeter, the unmistakable silhouette of St Peter’s Dome stands out. This is an important historical record of a monumental gateway that is now bricked up. From the series: *The Splendours of Ancient and Modern Rome*, Book One (*The Gates and Walls of Rome*), Plate 18. The work is printed on an intact sheet of 18th-century laid paper, characterised by wide original margins extending beyond the copper plate’s edge. At the centre of the sheet is a prestigious contemporary circular watermark. In excellent condition. Slight, natural signs of ageing on the outer margins which do not affect the engraved area.
