Description
Domenico Montagu – View of the Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle, by Jean Barbault 386 x 527 mm A splendid etching and engraving on contemporary laid paper, taken from the famous collection *Les plus beaux édifices de la Rome moderne*, published in Rome by Bouchard & Gravier around 1763, during the pontificate of Pope Clement XIII.The work is distinguished by a bold and dramatic angled perspective that emphasises the Baroque grandeur of the façade and dome of Sant’Andrea della Valle, enlivened in the foreground by lively 18th-century ‘macchiette’ and flanked in the background by the silhouette of San Carlo ai Catenari. At the lower margin, outside the engraving, the plate bears the signatures of the artists (Barbault del. and D. Montegu Sculp.)This copy is in an excellent state of preservation: the print is fresh, sharp and vigorous, rich in chiaroscuro contrasts, with sound paper and wide, uncut original margins extending beyond the copper plate’s edge.
