Stephan Colbenschlag, *La Pietà*, after Annibale Carracci, etching, 317 x 248 mm
This important and majestic Baroque engraving, executed in etching and burin on contemporary laid paper, transposes onto copper the famous composition of the Farnese Pietà conceived by Annibale Carracci (Anib. Car. In.). The work was masterfully engraved from the original in Rome by the engraver Stephanus Colbensius (Stephan von Koblenz, Italianised as Stefano da Coblenza, as indicated by the inscription ‘Romae Stepha. Colbensiu. F.’). In the lower section, the extensive passage of Latin text contains a solemn dedication—adorned in the centre by the noble family’s coat of arms—addressed to Count and Marquis Carlo Gerolamo Solaro di Moretta (Carolo Hieronymo Solario de Moreta), an influential diplomat and ambassador of the Savoy Crown in Rome to Pope Alexander VII (Sabaudie Oratori ad S.mum D.N. Alexandrum VII). This precise historical reference allows us to date the publication of the plate exactly to the years of this pontificate, namely between 1655 and 1667. In excellent condition. The sheet appears to have been trimmed almost right up to the edge of the copper plate, whilst retaining the image in its entirety. A natural horizontal fold runs down the centre. There is a single circular darkened area (an old ink stain or smudge) located in the upper left-hand portion within the shadowed area, and some natural discolouration.
