A large imperial Yangcai porcelain vase
China, Qing dynasty, Qianlong mark and period (1736-1795)
Baluster-shaped with a flared neck, the body decorated with court scenes of musicians and dancers moving through a vast landscape of mountains, trees and lakes. Some play the flute, sheng, sanxian or yunluo, while others dance gracefully or carry auspicious attributes such as lanterns, flower vases or ruyi sceptres, symbols of peace, happiness and longevity; The neck decorated with bats holding shou characters and sapaic motifs among lotuses and foliate scrolls on a "rouge de fard" (Yanzhi hong) background, the shoulder punctuated with a frieze of stylised banana leaves, two chilong flanking the neck form the handles, Qianlong mark with six characters in iron red on a turquoise glaze background.
