Description
16th CENTURY SPANISH SCHOOL, after RAPHAEL
Venus stung by a rose
Panel.
(old restorations)
42.8 x 32.5 cm
Note: Another version of this composition, formerly attributed to Correggio, is in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston (inventory P26w3; canvas, 97 x 72 cm). Both are derived from the engraving by Marco Dente da Ravenna, circa 1516, taken from the decoration by Raphael's workshop for the Stufetta in Rome.
Raphael's workshop for the Stufetta of Cardinal Bibbiena. The subject was inspired by The Lamentation of Adonis by the Greek poet Bion (active around 100 BC): Venus, distraught at the death of her lover Adonis, wanders barefoot through the woods and is wounded by brambles.
Expert : Stéphane PINTA - Cabinet TURQUIN.
