Two miniatures with oval views in grisaille, also known as cameo.

(damaged frames)
Sight: 7.3 x 5.9 cm (frame: 13.2 x 12.1 cm)
A third grisaille portrait, in a similar frame but unsigned. Sight: 8 x 6.3 cm (frame: 16.3 x 14.7 cm)
Note: Originally from Finland, the artist Jacob Spornberg settled in Bath, England, at the end of the 19th century. At the time, the spa town was renowned for its artists who specialised in miniature portraits and cut-out silhouettes, brought back as souvenirs by spa-goers. To set himself apart from the competition, Spornberg reinvented the genre with the development of the "Etruscan profile" (in red and black) and the "cameo profile" (in sepia). His miniature portraits were framed in black-painted papier-mache and held in place by a gilded metal buckle decorated with flowers or bunches of grapes. This typical framing and ornate buckles can be seen here.
