Qajar Iran, second half of the 19th century
A wedding mirror with lacquered and polychromatic painted wooden panels, rectangular in shape with a scalloped architectural pediment, topped with a fleur-de-lis. The two panels, which open to reveal the original mercury mirror, are decorated with courtly scenes within pointed-arch medallions: young men and women wearing turbans conversing in flower-filled gardens, amidst cypress trees, rosebushes, ewers and vases set upon tazzas; cartouches of blooming roses at the top and bottom, spandrels with gold and blue floral scrollwork on a gilded background. The frame and pediment are entirely inlaid with khatam-kari marquetry featuring star motifs, punctuated by polychrome borders. The reverse of the panels is decorated with gilded floral garlands on a reddish-brown background. Wood, polychrome lacquer and gold, khatam marquetry, mercury glass.
