RELIC CHEST, 18th/19th CENTURY A circular brass reliquary, under glass, containing a relic of Saint Matilda of Ringelheim (c. 895–968), Queen of Germany and wife of Henry I the Fowler, set against a background of gilded weave decorated with scrolls and a blue paper rosette, with a hand-inscribed cartouche reading ‘Sanctæ Mathildis Reginæ’. On the reverse, a red wax seal bearing the episcopal coat of arms—a shield surmounted by a prelate’s mitre and a motto on a banner—sealed with silk threads, intact. Probably of Germanic origin. Diameter: 3.7 cm.
