Lodew BOSSCKE (1900–1980)
Nude against a Red Drape, oil on canvas, signed lower right (in the studio). 80 x 60 cm. NB: Born in Schaerbeek on 4 August 1900. Education: Anderlecht School of Drawing, Brussels Academy, Taelemans’ class. In 1926, he settled in Paris, where he worked as a stained-glass designer and painter in the studio of the master glassmaker J. Grüber. He continued his training, studied drawing at the Grande Chaumière, attended the École des Beaux-Arts as an external student, and took anatomy classes with Dr Richer. Returning to Belgium in 1933, he was awarded the ‘Manteau’ Prize and became a teacher of drawing at the Athénée Royal d’Ixelles. In 1924, the poet Jean Tousseul dedicated an article to him in his book *Peintres et sculpteurs nouveaux en Belgique*. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, where he was consistently noted by critics, notably the writer Han Ryner. He took part in various art fairs: the Ghent Triennial, the Salon de Printemps, etc. Exhibitions: in Brussels, Paris, Ghent, Antwerp and Canada. Galerie Thémis, Galerie Bernheim Jeune (Paris), Galerie Giroux, Galerie Manteau, Galerie “Rez-de-chaussée d’Ixelles”, Galerie l’Atelier, Galerie d’Egmont, Galerie le Verseau, Galerie Tamara Pfeiffer, etc. His last exhibition was in 1972 at the Maison des Artistes in Anderlecht. An independent spirit, he pursued his own artistic development without concerning himself with prevailing trends. He died on 16 May 1980.
