Farm and fountain, oil on canvas. 99 x 79 cm. Signed lower right. Inscription on the reverse: 48 rue de l’Ermitage. Tear in the lower right-hand corner. Note: Henri Victor Wolvens was a Belgian painter, graphic artist and draughtsman. Trained at the Academy of Sint-Joost-ten-Node (H. Ottevaere) and Saint-Gilles; active in Ixelles and Uccle (Labor studio, 1921–22). First exhibition at the G. Giroux Gallery (Brussels, 1925). Travelled to Prague; worked in France, Houffalize and on the Belgian coast. An Expressionist and animist, closely associated with A. Van Dyck, W. Van Overstraeten and A. Dasnoy, he is distinguished by a dynamic technique, thick and colourful layers, and his exploration of light. A recognised painter of seascapes, harbours, beaches and sea defences, as well as portraits, figures, landscapes and still lifes. Member of the Compagnons de l’Art, Orientations, Jeune Peinture Belge and Kunst van Heden. His works are held in museums in Brussels, Antwerp, Ixelles, Ostend, Bruges and Liège.
