Description
Skull of a giant deer (Megaloceros giganteus)
Pleistocene, peat bogs in Germany
Wingspan: 2.51 m
Height: 1.58 m
Depth: 1.40 m
Authentic skull of Megaloceros giganteus, also known as the ‘great moorland deer’ or ‘giant Irish elk’. Having first appeared nearly 400,000 years ago and become extinct at the end of the last ice age, this colossal herbivore roamed the plains of Europe with antlers spanning nearly 3.50 metres from tip to tip — the largest antlers ever borne by a deer. It lived at the same time as woolly rhinoceroses, bears and mammoths. This fossil, recovered from peat bogs in Germany, is a composite consisting of approximately 70 per cent genuine bone, created from a partially complete skull and antler sections from other individuals. Its jawbones belong to two different individuals. It is therefore a so-called composite specimen (derived from several individuals). The whole has been assembled to form this antler set. The non-original parts have been filled in with resin.
Sold with its metal display stand and rolling tray.
A certificate of provenance from the previous owner (a geological prospector) will be provided to the purchaser. Photographs of the skull assembled with the antlers, as well as a diagram illustrating the original parts, are available on request.
Delivery can be arranged on quotation through a company specialising in the transport and restoration of fossils.
