Description
An old commemorative sculpture of the Napoleonic battles, featuring numerous references to the battles of the First Empire and to the symbols of Emperor Napoleon I. An important historical artefact in the form of an anonymous piece of folk art. It features the Napoleonic eagle above a cartouche containing the letter N, several relief depictions of the bicorne hat, the crocodile recalling the Egyptian campaign but also the English caricature of the Coup d’État of Brumaire (‘The Corsican Crocodile’), the Emperor’s face within the centre of a leaf bud, a Gribeauval cannon crossed with its loading tool surmounting a bicorne hat, a ball enclosed in an openwork cage, perhaps symbolising the prison on Saint Helena, and a rabbit recalling the episode of Napoleon’s defeat at the hands of an army of rabbits in the aftermath of the victory at Friedland.
Engraved on the statue are the names of the battles of Arcole 1796, Rivoli 1797, Marengo 1800, Friedland 1807, Eylau 1807 (spelt Lyeau 1808), Waterloo 1815 (spelt ‘Waterloo’), Magenta 1859, Milan, as well as the motto ‘Ci git la gloire de La. F. (la FRANCE)’
