Description
TCHOKWE, ANGOLA. A wooden statue of the famous King Chibinda Ilunga, with a beautiful brown patina, used in ritual ceremonies. He is depicted standing, carrying a weapon and a staff, and surrounded by an animal and a small figure, both crouching at his feet. His headdress is elaborately crafted, adorned with two masks on either side. Traces of organic material remain on the chin, probably where hair was once attached to represent a beard. Small cracks on the left cheek. First half of the 20th century. H. 36 cm Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Antenor Patino (1896–1982) and Beatriz de Rivera y Digeon (1905–2009), his second wife.
