¤ LUBA, HEMBA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
A male Nkisi Mihake statue carved from wood, with a deep, dark patina resulting from ritual use and age. It stands on short legs, with its feet resting on a circular plinth. The hands support a prominent belly. The head is large and adorned with a sort of diadem and a finely carved beard. The eyes are cowrie-shaped, surmounted by broad eyebrows. The nose is straight and the mouth is narrow, with slightly pursed lips. Its purpose is initiation, divination, healing and reconciliation; a distinctive feature of this sculpture is that it carries its magical power on its head, beneath its woven rattan headdress. Signs of wear on the reverse of the circular base. Mounted on a plinth.
