Description
¤ BAOULÉ, IVORY COAST Statue of Blolo Bian (husband of the Afterlife) or Asié Usu (Spirit of Nature), carved from wood and painted, with a heavy patina and signs of wear from ritual use. A beautiful, classical piece, featuring a very conventional head adorned with an elaborate headdress, fine facial features marked by ritual scarifications (keloids) and an asymmetrical beard on the chin. The rest of the body is also adorned with scarifications (neck, abdomen, arms and back). The arms are detached from the torso and both hands rest on the stomach at navel level. She is clad in a small, fitted loincloth and her two beautifully curved legs extend down to her feet, which in turn rest on the circular base.
