¤ MUMUYÉ, BÉNOUÉ RIVER VALLEY, NORTH-EAST NIGERIA.
A large Lagalagana male statue carved from wood, with a beautiful dark patina resulting from long ritual use. Its function is that of guardian and protector of the family clan. Its head features a crest on the top and prominent ears. The face, with its two large round eyes, is entirely scarified, as is the abdomen above the protruding navel. The two arms extend from the torso, raised slightly forwards, creating a sense of movement, much like the undulating legs. It is typical of the style of the famous master sculptor Nyavo-Père of Pantisawa and is very similar to a model featured in a major collection (Duperrier/Goldet, Berna). On a plinth
