Description
# FANG, CAMEROON - EQUATORIAL GUINEA
Important fetish statue in the Byeri tradition. Medium-hard wood with a light patina, faded in places, and remains of organic matter from offerings. The top of the head is girded with its original feathers, which is extremely rare. The eyes are marked by nailed metal washers. A beard and raffia necklace complete the upper part. The back of the head has a rattan neck guard. Both arms are attached and held in place by a rattan ligature. At the bottom, a braided fibre loincloth highlights the virility of the fetish, which has a marked patina of ritual use.
Late 19th or early 20th century
H. 63 cm
Erosion at the base of the feet
Close model: a very similar example, collected by Günter Tessmann in 1909, is in the collections of the Völkerkunde Sammlung museum in Lübeck. See the Musée Dapper book "Fang", 1991, page 54.
