Description
¤ LUBA, HEMBA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO
Monoxyle hardwood caryatid stool with a beautiful shiny black patina due to handling of the seat and long ritual use. The circular seat is supported on the head of a standing female figure with her arms raised and her hands wide open. Three fingers from each hand give the illusion of keeping the seat in balance and make it very light. The legs are bent and the wide feet rest on a circular, stepped base, like the underside of the seat. This caryatid bears all the classic attributes (keloids, scarification marks, long headdress, elaborate bun) as found on pieces from workshops in the south-east Congo region, between the banks of the Lomani and Lwika rivers.
Late 19th - early 20th century
H. 38 cm
The underside of the base is slightly eroded, probably largely due to woodworm when it was stored between ceremonies.
