* MENDI, SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS, PAPUA NEW GUINEA,
War shield in carved wood and polychrome pigments with a beautiful patina of age and long warlike use. It is carved with a stone tool, indicating pre-contact manufacture. The decoration is an abstract figure evoking the face of a protective ancestor. The handle is made of plant fibres and forms the two pupils of the "eyes" as they emerge through the holes in the centre.
