Description
¤ MUMUYÉ, BENOUE RIVER VALLEY, NORTHEASTERN NIGERIA.
Large wooden male Lagalagana statue, beautiful dark patina of long ritual use. His function is that of guardian and protector of the family clan. His head is crowned with a crest and large ears. The face, with its two large round eyes, is entirely scarred, as is the abdomen above the protruding navel. The two arms, slightly raised towards the front, stand out from the torso, giving a sort of movement, as do the undulating legs. It is typically in the style of the famous master sculpture Nyavo-Père de Pantisawa and is very close to models in major collections (Duperrier/Goldet, Berna). Plinth
First half of the 20th century
H. 73 cm
Provenance: Collection of a Swiss architect, brought back before 1920
