Description
¤ DOGON, MALI
Statue of a female ancestor in the Bombou Toro style, a village in the heart of the Bandiagara cliff. She is in a seated position, but without a seat. Hardwood (acacia) with a dark patina, heavily oozing as a result of numerous ritual offerings. The head is adorned with a long crest running down the back of the head and extending to the front of the nose, a classic treatment often found on statuary from this ethnic group. The eyes are very wide-set, almost half-closed as a sign of contemplation and wisdom. The lips are full and adorned with a labret, which is slightly missing due to a chip. A long neck links the head to the beautiful, energetic chest, below which fall the two arms, well detached from the bust with its prominent navel. The hands rest on the front of the knees. This sculpture has all the qualities of a very old cult piece. An old collector's label still visible under the base indicates the town of Délémont (Swiss Jura).
