Description
¤ BAMBARA, BOZO, MALI
Statue of Jonyéléni in light wood with a beautiful shiny black patina for ritual use. It is executed in a style that reflects its undeniable age. The anatomical treatment is perfectly balanced and incredibly modern. It is entirely in keeping with what it is supposed to represent, namely a feminine ideal whose beauty makes it extremely attractive. She is standing with her head adorned with a stylised headdress of plaits behind her ears. The face is sober, with the bridge of the nose separating two flat faces under the superciliary arches that mark the absence of eyes. The face ends in a pointed chin with no mouth. A neck links the head to broad, rounded shoulders whose arms hang down from the bust to the rounded belly. A beautiful, energetic chest is drawn forward. The buttocks and two short curved legs rest on two well-defined feet. It was brought back around 1920 and is said to have a remnant of an old label under one foot. Pedestal
First half of the 20th century
