Description
MALEKULA ISLAND, VANUATU, MELANESIA Skull over-modelled in clay or vegetable paste and covered with polychrome pigments to recreate the features of the deceased high-ranking person. It was used as the top part of a funerary mannequin known as the Rambaramp, made from fern trunks and presented at funerals. Kept in the House of Men, only the skull was retained. Note the ritual deformation by elongation of the skull. Early 20th century. H. 15.5 cm - L. 21 cm - W. 14 cm Provenance: Collection of Doctor Paul Langlade, who received it as a gift in 1936 in Port Vila (see document).
