Description
¤ TELLEM, DOGON, MALI Statue of a mythical hermaphrodite primordial ancestor, standing, in hard wood (acacia) with a thick crusty patina that has cracked following numerous ritual offerings (libélé, millet porridge and various). The two highly stylised arms are raised above the head with both hands wide open, imploring 'heaven'. The top of the skull ends in a central ridge. The arrow-shaped nose separates the half-spherical eyes. The lower part of the face has virtually no mouth and ends in a beard. The bust shows a chest below which the belly, with its prominent navel, is bulging and scarred. The legs are half-bent and the feet disappear into the circular base. The back and the back of the arms are very flat. This sculpture has all the qualities of a very old cult piece with a collector's label. Pedestal 19th century H. 50 cm Minor cracks, erosion to the breasts (with indigenous repairs) and to the back of the base Provenance: Collection of a Swiss architect, brought back before 1920
