* MAPRIK, PAPUA NEW GUINEA.
Large carved black palm wood stick covered with polychrome pigments at the top and with a brown patina of use underneath. It was used during ceremonies in honour of the yam, known throughout Melanesia for its sacred nature. The carved part represents a male ancestor carrying two hornbills on his head. Maprik village (North Coast).
