¤ LUBA, HEMBA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO Male Nkisi Mihake statue in wood with a strong dark patina of ritual use and antiquity. She is standing on short legs with her feet resting on a circular base. The hands support a prominent belly. The head is large and adorned with a sort of diadem and a finely cut beard. The eyes are cowrie shell-shaped, topped by broad eyebrows. The nose is straight and the mouth is thin with slightly pursed lips. The purpose of this sculpture is initiation, divination, healing and conciliation, and its special feature is that it carries its magical charge on its head under its woven rattan headdress.
