Description
¤ CHAMBA, NIGERIA
Statue of a standing female figure in hardwood with a red ochre patina, used for ritual purposes. The head is topped by a flared headdress that may have served as an altar. The face, with its finely marked features, is adorned with scarification marks and large ears. The anatomical construction is characteristic of this culture and can be compared to that of the Mumuyé. The arms extend from the front of the upper torso, without a neck, and are thrown back to rest on the stomach. Two small breasts point downwards below the protruding navel. The legs are saw-toothed at the front and straight at the back. Two small wood chips on the headdress and erosion on the back of the feet. Base
