Description
MALEKULA ISLAND, VANUATU, MELANESIA
Detachable figurehead from a Naho outrigger pirogue called Solip. It comes from the island of Vao (north-east of Malekula). Polychrome wood with a classical ending in the shape of a bird carrying on its back the symbol of wealth in these small islands, a pig. A very fine example with a remarkable patina of use and age. It is an indicator of the social rank of its owner, linked to a system of ritual ranks called Maki. Small cracks and erosions. Late 19th century.
H. 13.5 cm - L. 78 cm
