Description
¤ MAMA, NIGERIA A buffalo-shaped crest mask made of wood covered with reddish-brown pigment and with a beautiful patina of long ritual use. It is dominated by two large flat horns separated at the bottom by a ridge and which almost meet at the top. At the base of these horns, a mouth flares out in front. The whole thing rests on a mass of wood, the underside of which is cupped to allow it to be carried on the head. It is a symbol of fertility for the harvests but also of fecundity. Pedestal First half of the 20th century H. 45 cm Provenance: Galerie Dereck Graine
