Description
¤ MUMUYÉ, BENOUE RIVER VALLEY, NORTHEASTERN NIGERIA
Male Lagalagana statue in wood with a beautiful brown patina of long ritual use and ochre pigments. He is the guardian and protector of the family clan. His head wears a sort of helmet with a crest at the top, forming an integral part of the face with two large round eyes. Fine cuts mark the base of the crest on the forehead, forming a kind of beard. Oblique scarification marks run from the corners of the mouth. The two arms stand out from the torso and stop at the hips. The navel protrudes above her sex. The legs are wide apart, reinforcing her stability, whose off-centre position makes her one of the "dancing" models. Soclée
