Description
¤ MUMUYÉ, BENUE RIVER VALLEY, NORTHEASTERN NIGERIA
Male Lagalagana statue in wood with remains of natural pigments and brown patina of long ritual use. Its function is that of guardian and protector of the family clan. An imposing head is supported by a powerful neck in the upper third of the sculpture. The bust, armed with prominent pectorals, is turned slightly and the two arms, lifted from the body, stop just above the hips. The sculpture ends with two short legs showing signs of erosion. The position of the legs is off centre, making this one of the "dancing" models. Pedestal
Late 19th -early 20th century
H. 33cm
Provenance: Galerie Carrefour (Pierre and Claude Vérité, Boulevard Raspail, Paris). Galerie Dereck Graine
