Description
* BOIKEN, PRINCE ALEXANDER MOUNTAINS, PAPUA NEW GUINEA,
Rare standing male statue with hands resting on the belly and with a haughty head carriage and face armed with a powerful busted nose. The pelvis is surrounded by a sculpted loincloth and the straight legs come to a base concealing the feet. The head is crowned with a headdress made of plant fibres, evoking Christ's crown of thorns. Wood with a patina of red pigments and ritual use. This piece is associated with the "Cargo Cult" of the Mount Turu movement, which spread throughout Oceania at the end of the 19th century in reaction to colonisation.
H. 39 cm
Provenance: Collected by Ulrich Kortmann in Rindagum, near Angoram in 1987.
