Description
¤ BAOULÉ, IVORY COAST
Male and female Janus Asié Usu (Spirit of Nature) statue in wood with beautiful brown patina and ritual wear and tear. A beautiful sculpture with a shell-shaped headdress above well-proportioned, academic faces. It bears the traditional scarification marks of high-ranking figures. The cheeks are adorned with small keloids in relief on either side. The man has a beard on his chin. The rest of the body is also decorated with scarification marks (neck, torso and hips). The arms are clasped to the torso and both hands rest on the stomach at the navel. They wear a small loincloth made of plant fibres and a beaded belt. They are seated on a traditional stool and their beautifully curved legs end in small feet. Pedestal
