Description
WAGOGO, TANZANIA
Limba lamellophone (sanza) made of dense wood, seeds and 18 iron tongues. Brown patina from long use, showing a good age. Noise makers threaded onto the tongues and inserted into the resonance box extend the sound of the instrument. The bottom of the soundboard is decorated with geometric engravings. The Wagogos (an agrarian community in central Tanzania) are renowned for their vocal polyphony and traditional instrumental ensembles, including this sanza, which accompanies songs, laments and epics.
