SONINKE, SENEGAL, An imposing calabash with multiple functions. In addition to its uses as a receptacle for millet, maize or rice, cloth and dowry jewellery, it becomes a very loud noisemaker when it is partly filled with seeds. It is then shaken by women during wedding processions or circumcision rites. One crack has been carefully restored. Calabash, plant fibres.
