SONINKE, SENEGAL,
An imposing calabash with multiple functions. In addition to its uses as a receptacle for millet, maize or rice, cloth and dowry jewellery, it becomes a very loud noisemaker when it is partly filled with seeds. It is then shaken by women during wedding processions or circumcision rites.
One crack has been carefully restored.
