Description
Pair of coconut bowls - Papua New Guinea - 14 / 13 cm Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between the 1970s and 1980s during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. These two carved coconut bowls come from the vast Sepik River region, one of the great creative centres of Papua New Guinea. Made from carefully hollowed shells, they have elegant spherical shapes enhanced by arched handles and engraved decoration with curvilinear motifs characteristic of the Sepik aesthetic. These vessels were intended for everyday or ceremonial use, and bear witness to the ability of Oceanian artists to transform the most modest of materials into objects of remarkable plastic presence. The deep patina, consistent wear of the surfaces and softness of the relief reveal long use.
