Description
Headdress - Mendi - Southern Highlands - Papua New Guinea Materials : Base included (gallery condition). Provenance: Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between the 1970s and 1980s during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. Dimensions: H. 28 cm An elegant traditional headdress from the Mendi people of the Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea, made from woven plant fibres and a bamboo frame finely engraved with geometric motifs. Used for ceremonies, inter-tribal gatherings and ceremonial dances, these ornaments played a key role in building the identity and prestige of their wearer. The quality of the weaving, which is remarkably regular, contrasts with the refined sobriety of the structure, in which the decorated bamboo slat forms a genuine sculptural element. The engraved motifs, executed with great mastery, testify to the importance attached to ornamentation in the arts of the Highlands, where every detail helps to assert social status and cultural belonging.
