Description
Ceremonial dance stick Melanesia
Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved.
Materials: Wood
Dimensions: H. 39 cm.
This Melanesian dancing stick is distinguished by its elegant bifid end, finely carved and decorated with incised geometric motifs. These decorations, enhanced with pigments, bear witness to meticulous workmanship and an aesthetic vocabulary widely used in Pacific island cultures.
Used for ceremonies, dances and community events, these objects helped to dramatise the traditions and stories passed on within groups. The simplicity of its overall shape contrasts with the rich ornamentation of the upper part, creating a particularly dynamic and harmonious silhouette.
