Description
Pigment cup - Murik Lakes - Papua New Guinea - 13 cm
Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved.
Dimensions:12 cm
Carved from a single block of wood, this bowl has a slightly flared cylindrical receptacle resting on a base decorated with two opposing faces in the style typical of this region.
The figures, with their elongated eyes, protruding noses and open mouths, give the object a strong sculptural presence. Arranged on either side of the foot, they seem to symbolically support the vessel, creating a dialogue between utilitarian function and spiritual representation. The sober volumes and geometric lines are reminiscent of the aesthetic specific to the peoples of the Sepik coast and Murik lakes, where everyday objects are often given a ritual dimension.
These small bowls were used to store pigments and vegetable or mineral powders, sometimes used for body painting, decorating ceremonial objects or certain ritual preparations. The blackened interior and visible signs of use bear witness to this practical and repeated function.
