Marupai charm - Papua New Guinea -
Materials : Nut - Seed
Base included (gallery condition).
Provenance: Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between the 1970s and 1980s during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved.
Dimensions: H. 3.5 cm
A small charm carved from a nut or hard seed, representing a stylised face with large almond-shaped eyes and incised geometric features. A hole at the top allowed it to be suspended, probably worn as a pendant or attached to a ritual object.
This type of amulet, known as a marupai in certain regions of the Gulf of Papua, was associated with protection, hunting, fertility and personal prestige. The prominent eyes, a characteristic feature of Papuan art, evoke the vigilance of ancestral spirits and their ability to watch over the wearer.
