Description
Spoon - Markham Valley - Papua New Guinea - France
Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved.
Dimensions: H. 11 cm - Materials: Coconut
An elegant ceremonial spoon made from a finely hollowed half-shell with an elongated, harmonious silhouette. The handle, reduced to a short protrusion at one end, is carved with a small stylised head whose features, softened by use today, are still perceptible. A few geometric incisions highlight the junction between the container and the carved figure.
The sobriety of the whole, combined with the quality of the dark brown patina acquired over time, gives this piece a remarkable presence. The surfaces bear the marks of long use, revealing the satin polish characteristic of objects handled over several generations.
Similar spoons are known from early collections on the north-east coast of New Guinea and are generally attributed to the Markham Valley or neighbouring regions. They were used for food consumption, sago-based preparations or in various ceremonial and exchange contexts, where everyday objects could also take on a symbolic dimension.
