Description
Ladle - Manam Island - Papua New Guinea - France
Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved.
Dimensions: H. 36 cm - Materials: Wood, Coconut
This elegant ladle consists of a bowl made from half a coconut with a dark brown patina and a long vertical handle in finely carved wood. The handle is decorated with a succession of small stylised anthropomorphic figures arranged one above the other, forming a veritable column of characters whose faces emerge from the handle with a remarkable economy of means.
The bowl, which is deep and wide open, shows signs of prolonged use and a beautiful patina of age. The contrast between the functional simplicity of the vessel and the symbolic richness of the handle gives the object a particularly expressive presence.
In the island societies of the north coast of Papua New Guinea, such ladles were used to prepare or distribute food and drink in ceremonial contexts. The carved figures could evoke ancestors, protective spirits or lineages, making the domestic object part of the ritual universe.
