Description
Betel nut mortar - Huon Gulf - Papua New Guinea Materials: Wood - Base included (gallery condition). Provenance: Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. Dimensions: H. 23 cm A rare betel nut mortar carved in the form of a seated figure, knees raised and hands resting on the legs. The cylindrical vessel, hollowed out of the top of the head, was used to grind the ingredients used to chew betel nut, a fundamental social and ceremonial practice throughout Melanesia. The figure displays the stylistic characteristics of Huon Gulf production: elongated face with almond-shaped eyes, prominent nose, discreet mouth and geometric treatment of the hairstyle or cranial ornamentation. The shoulders and back are enriched with engraved motifs evoking tattoos, scarification marks or body adornment. The compact, balanced composition gives the object a strong sculptural presence. In Huon Gulf societies, prestige mortars were used for ceremonial exchanges, meetings between allies or community gatherings. The consumption of betel, associated with sociability, speech and social status, made these objects markers of prestige as much as everyday utensils. The beautiful dark brown patina, the regular wear of the container and the traces of use visible on the inside bear witness to prolonged use. An old chip on the rim of the mortar, consistent with the age of the object, does not affect its stability or aesthetic quality.
