Description
Wheel of a pirogue - Murik Lakes - Papua New Guinea Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. Dimensions: H. 84 cm - Materials: Wood A large carved pirogue prow with a vertical composition featuring an anthropomorphic figure with a curved nose. The top is topped by a stylised face with highly geometric features. The back is enriched with sculpted motifs and friezes that emphasise the slender silhouette of the whole. In the societies of New Guinea, pirogues played an essential role in travel, trade and ceremonial activities. Their bows were often decorated with elaborate sculptures evoking ancestors, protective spirits or mythical beings, intended to affirm the prestige of the group and ensure its protection when sailing. The combination of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic elements seen on this piece is fully in keeping with this symbolic universe. This piece is striking for the elegance of its proportions, the expressive vigour of its carved decoration and the quality of its antique patina. Traces of use and the natural erosion of the relief bear witness to its age and reinforce its authentic character.
