Description
Spoon - Markham Valley - Papua New Guinea - France Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. Dimensions: H. 11 cm - Materials: Coconut An elegant ceremonial spoon made from a finely hollowed coconut half-shell. Its elongated, slightly curved profile is extended by a small carved handle evoking the stylised head of a bird or spirit. The outer surface is decorated with an engraving of parallel lines and rows of circular punctuation marks in a light-coloured material, creating a subtle contrast with the dark brown patina of the material. The sobriety of the form highlights the quality of the carving and the natural curves of the coconut. The marks of use and the polish acquired through handling bear witness to long use and give the object an authentic presence. Similar spoons are known from the north coast of Papua New Guinea. By stylistic comparison, particularly because of its slender shape, its small zoomorphic handle and its punctuated decoration, this piece can be compared with products from the Markham Valley or neighbouring regions of the Gulf of Huon.
