Description
Scoop - Massim - Trobriand Islands - Papua New Guinea
Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved.
Dimensions: H. 37 cm - Materials: Wood
A beautiful pirogue scoop with a wide, elegantly curved shape, carved from a single piece of wood. The openwork handle, integrated into the body of the object, is topped by a carved panel decorated with concentric curvilinear motifs characteristic of the decorative repertoire of the Massim peoples. These geometric compositions, based on spirals and interlocking arcs, are one of the most recognisable hallmarks of the art of the Trobriand Islands and neighbouring regions at the eastern end of New Guinea.
Intended to evacuate the water taken on board large sailing pirogues, scoops played an important role in the maritime equipment of Massim societies, famous for their inter-island exchanges and ceremonial expeditions. Even utilitarian objects were the object of particular care, combining functional efficiency with aesthetic quality.
The antique patina, traces of use and remarkably balanced proportions give this piece a sober, elegant presence. A fine example of the nautical art of the Massim region, where sculpture accompanied the essential activities of maritime life.
