Description
Miniature mask - Sepik River - Papua New Guinea Materials : Wood Base included (gallery condition). Provenance: Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. Dimensions: H. 24 cm (35 cm with stand) Miniature anthropomorphic mask carved from a single piece of wood, with an elongated oval face. The strongly developed nose dominates the composition and is set between two circular perforated eyes. The triangular hairstyle is decorated with incised spiral motifs, while a row of denticles runs around the face. The sculpture is covered in a dark patina that highlights the volumes of the face and the decorative motifs. The reverse is hollowed out, as is the case with many sculptures from the Sepik region. The people of the Sepik River developed one of the richest sculptural traditions in Oceania. Stylised faces with protruding noses, perforated eyes and geometric or spiral designs are recurrent motifs in the art of this region. Smaller examples could be used as ornaments, ritual decorations or votive sculptures associated with ceremonial houses and ancestor worship.
