Watam ceremonial bowl, Papua New Guinea Material: Carved wood with old black patina Provenance: Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved. Dimensions: H. 69 cm. This important ceremonial bowl comes from the Watam region, one of the major artistic centres on the northern coast of Papua New Guinea. Carved from a single piece of wood, it has a particularly elegant, deeply carved oval silhouette, the ends of which are enlivened by subtle sculpted elements evoking stylised ancestral figures or motifs.
