Description
Provenance: Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between the 1970s and 1980s during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved.
The work is recorded in a field notebook under reference A.65 (6), dated 1978, with the words: "Plat, Marangis, Ramu E.". Marangis is a village in the province of Madang, in the Ramu region of Papua New Guinea.
Dimensions: H. 70 cm.
This important ceremonial bowl comes from the Watam region, one of the major artistic centres on the northern coast of Papua New Guinea. Carved from a single piece of wood, it has a particularly elegant, deeply carved oval silhouette, the ends of which are enlivened by subtle sculpted elements evoking stylised ancestral figures or motifs.
The inner surface has been polished by use, and retains a deep black patina reflecting long ritual use. On the outside, the sobriety of the volumes is punctuated by finely executed details that give the whole a remarkable presence and great aesthetic strength.
