Description
Miniature mask - Sepik River - Papua New Guinea
Materials : Wood
Base included (gallery condition).
Provenance: Provenance: Former Guy Seghers collection (Belgium). Collected in Papua New Guinea between 1970 and 1980 during scientific missions linked to the Leopold III Biological Station on Laing Island. Archives and period photographs preserved.
Dimensions: H. 19 cm (27 cm with stand)
Miniature mask carved from hardwood with a dark brown patina. The face displays the stylistic characteristics emblematic of Sepik region production: a rounded forehead decorated with parallel incisions, deeply sunken oblique eyes and a long aquiline nose forming the central element of the composition. Below the nose is a sculpted circular opening that accentuates the graphic, abstract character of the whole.
Through the simplification of its volumes and its stylised expression, this work bears witness to the enduring artistic traditions of the Sepik basin, one of the greatest creative centres of Oceanian art. The clean lines, strong gaze and balanced forms give this small sculpture a remarkable presence despite its modest size.
